Ready for School Checklist

Starting school is an important milestone for any child, and many parents are anxious that their child isn’t in anyway impaired – they want to know that their children will be ‘up there with the rest’.

Often, this can result in early academic pressure. Some children fall into learning more naturally than others, but there are some important skills that are worth ensuring that your child has before starting school.

·         Self-care: While in kindergarten or childcare, your child may have had assistance going to the toilet, at school they will need to be able to go themselves. They will need to be able to wipe their bottom, wash their hands, manage their clothes, know how to monitor their temperature so that they can put a jumper on or off when required and last, but not least, they will need to know how to blow their nose and cover their mouth when they sneeze or cough.

·         Belongings care: Your child should be able to do care for their own belongings and those of others. This means putting rubbish in the bin, putting lids on pens, using their lunch box and drink bottle, and looking after their school bag.

·         Fine motor skills: It is a great help if your child is able to competently (but not perfectly) use scissors and to hold a pen or pencil correctly. They might also be able to lace cards and trace objects.

·         Gross motor skills: Basic skills such as jumping, skipping, hopping, climbing and the ability to throw and catch a ball are helpful.

·         Intellectual skills: Skills that will help are the ability to count objects up to ten, number and letter recognition, knowledge and experience of books, colour and basic shape recognition.

·         Social skills: Having the confidence to play with other children is a great help, as is the ability to talk to adults.

·         Problem solving skills: Teachers find that children who can solve problems in their explorations, games and construction activities are something that they find helpful.

·         Name recognition: In a class of lots of children, the ability to recognise one’s own name is beneficial.
